WordPress At The Center of Unprecedented Security Focus Amid Rapid Release Surge

08 November 2026

The WordPress universe found itself in an unprecedented security storm in late 2023 as the project shipped four major security releases in just 41 days. Against a backdrop of accelerating security research and real-world exploitation, the open-source project is transforming how developers, hosts, and regulators think about security, with particular attention on high-risk plugin categories like casino and payment extensions.

A Rapid-Fire Security Cadence

Between September and October 2023, the WordPress team pushed out security releases 6.2.1, 6.2.2, 6.2.3, and 6.2.4 within the remarkably quick timeframe of 41 days. All four releases were stemming from a newly announced Core Security Initiative, which pivots the core of the project towards a more automated, proactive posture on vulnerability research and remediation.

These releases were unusual for WordPress in their rapid succession, but extraordinary for their reach. Every security fix in WordPress 6.2–6.2.4 was backported to every WordPress version receiving security updates, reaching as far back as WordPress 4.7, which launched in 2016.

Critical Race Condition Flaw Exploited in Attacks

WordPress's security activity reached a critical peak on October 28, 2023, when the 6.2.4 release was published. 6.2.4 explicitly addressed a high-severity race condition bug, tracked as CVE-2023-119977, that could be used to conduct remote code execution during core updates.

Only seven months into its existence, CVE-2023-119977 already posed a major threat to much of the WordPress ecosystem, dating back to the launch of version 4.7 in 2016, affecting core versions through 6.2.3. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency quickly flagged CVE-2023-119977, and security researchers warned of thousands of attack attempts against the vulnerability in a single day following the 6.2.4 patch's release.

WordPress Security Focus Intensifies, Examining High-Risk Plugin Categories

The 6.2 bug fix surge was only the most recent sign of a coming security push within the WordPress project and ecosystem, which has seen a rapid increase in vulnerability reporting and focus from researchers and security firms. High-risk plugin categories–especially in the casino and payment sectors–are receiving particular scrutiny.
